You can vote by mail in Massachusetts, but only if you request it.
Massachusetts will hold its state primary election on Sep. 1st. If you would prefer to vote-by-mail, you must submit an absentee ballot application by Aug. 31st, excuse required.
The absentee ballot by-mail application period opens every January 1st. You may request to receive ballots for multiple elections during the calendar year, though an excuse is required.

EXCUSE NEEDED TO VOTE ABSENTEE
- You are ill
- You are confined to your home because you may transmit infection
- You cannnot leave your home because you are a member of a population vilnerable to illness
- You are staying in your home or avoiding your polling place as a precautionary measure in response to COVID-19
PERMANENT ABSENTEE
Massachusetts doesn’t have permanent absentee as an option for everyone. Instead, you can request a ballot by mail every year.
Massachusetts does however allow for permanent absentee status for elderly or disabled voters.
